Watermelon for Dummies and Blog Award

What do you do when you can never tell when a watermelon is ripe?  Grow Golden Midget.  It turns yellow when its ripe.  Don't believe me?  Check this out!

Now folks, this is my kind of watermelon.

About a week or so again, Carolyn at Krazo Acres Farm honored me with the award above.  I am deeply touched that she would include me on her list.  Part of the deal is that I have to tell you seven things about me that you may not know and then pay this award forward to ten more blogs.

1.  I hate peas.

2.  I don't like dogs.

3.  My favorite bands are The Smiths, The Cure, and I wouldn't be an 80s girl without loving Duran Duran.

4.  My favorite book is "Gone With the Wind" by Margaret Mitchell.

5.  I have read the LHOTP series more times than I can count.

6.  I'm addicted to ice cream.

7.  One of my favorite meals is a hamburger and onion rings.

I have a dilemma when it comes to choosing ten blogs to highlight.  You see, I hate to say it, but I have not ventured into the blog world lately.  I stay so busy that I tend to read the same blogs without expanding my horizons.  I need your help.  Please, please, please comment and give me some good blogs to consider and I'll hold off naming my ten choices.  I hate to cop out on this, but I really need some help.  Of course, all of the blogs on my blog roll are great, but I need some new blood, and most of them have strong readerships.  Not that having a low readership is a requirement for getting this award, but I know there are some blogs out there that are just starting out that are worthy of some attention.  Please feel free to toot your own horn if you're a reader with a blog.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Happy homesteading,

Candace

  1. Oh, manomanomanoman! I so wish we could grow watermelon up here. That is my favorite food during the hot summer. I think I could live on it! I love that your Golden Midget watermelon still has seeds in it. Sure, they are a pain (heck, just spit 'em across the room) but I think ones with seeds are the most flavorful.

You DON'T LIKE PEAS!? Have you ever had fresh shell peas from the garden? How can you NOT like them??

    1. I have tried fresh peas, and I have never liked peas, even growing up. Oh, too bad you can't grow watermelons, but I think I would trade you for some of those luscious raspberries you had the other day. No one I know can grow raspberries around here. The seeds are fun to spit!

  2. I wish every melon and vegetable had a "color coding" like this watermelon does!

    1. I know, right! They worked out beautifully for us since I always pick watermelons too early.

  3. Gorgeous watermelons!!!! We will be trying that variety next year! I assume you started them from seed?
Thankfully, our new garden is doing well. We are harvesting tons of cucumbers, zucchinis, and yellow squash (those are a first for us), and we're already talking about expanding the garden for next year.
As for blogs, you introduced me to 2 of my favorites - Down to Earth, and Aspiring Homemaker - I know those are very popular though. I've also recently discovered Frugal Mama - not as much about homesteading, but great tips for cooking from scratch, saving $$, etc.
Keep up the great work!!! I also love to see your canning / preservation tally!! :)

    1. Thank you! They are tasty too. I got the seed from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. I'm so happy to hear your garden is doing so well, and apparently Daniel must enjoy it if you are expanding. I'll check out Frugal Mama.

  4. YUM, watermelon is a favorite and i swear i live off it and caprese all summer long. It's the best! Love how yours simply turned color to let you know it was ready, got to be easier then the thumping method i use lol.

    1. I've never been able to master the thump method, so the color change works for me. Love it!

  6. Well, I was internet-less for about 3 weeks and am now trying to get caught up. :o I'm glad to see you're still blogging, even if it means changing the pace to keep it up.

The watermelons look great and congratulations on the award!

I wanted to ask if I could "borrow" the photo from your "Splittin' Wood and Takin' Names" post last January. We're getting ready to build a place to store firewood and are modeling it after yours. I'm going to blog about it and would love to use that photo to show where we got the idea. I'll give you photo credit and a link back! Please let me know if this is okay. :)

    2. Thanks Candace! We bought the privacy fence panels just the other day. We've named August "wood month" so hopefully we'll get this built soon. :)
